Jakarta was first known as one of the named port of Sunda Kingdom of Sunda Kalapa (397-1527), located at the mouth of the Ciliwung River. The capital of the Kingdom of Sunda known as Dayeuh Pakuan Padjadjaran or Padjadjaran (now Bogor). In the 12th century, the port was known as a busy port of pepper. Foreign ships coming from China, Japan, South India, and the Middle East has been docked at the port carrying the goods like porcelain, coffee, silk, fabrics, perfumes, horses, wine, and dyes in exchange for spices spices are a commercial commodity that time. In 1527, Fatahillah changed the name of the city to Jayakarta, which means "city of victory" after the attack and occupied the port of Sunda Kelapa. Jayakarta name used since years (1527-1619).
Around the end of the 16th century the Dutch came to Jayakarta, after a stop in Banten in 1596. In 1619, the VOC was led by Jan Pieterszoon Coen Jayakarta after defeating forces occupied the Sultanate of Banten and later changed his name to Batavia. During the Dutch colonization, Batavia developed into a large and important city. Batavia name used since years (1619-1942). Colonization by Japan beginning in 1942 and changed the name Batavia to Djakarta in appealing to residents during World War II. Jakarta name used since 1942 to the present, to refer to the former Gemeente Batavia, the Dutch East Indies government was inaugurated in 1905. The name is considered as an abbreviation of the word Jayakarta (Dewanagari). The name is usually translated as "city of victory" or "triumph of the city", but the true meaning is "victory achieved by an act or effort".
